A medieval square must visit

Uma praça medieval de visita obrigatória

Excellent
The Plaza de Santiago is, along with the square of Oliveira, the heart of the historic center of Guimarães. Features and medieval traces, its existence dates back to the times of the foundation of Portugal and is unique in the country and the world. Its name is due to the apostle Santiago, who have brought here the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and would have put a pagan temple. It was in the seventeenth century, built here a chapel in honor of Santiago. This chapel was demolished in the nineteenth century and today, its design plan is marked on the floor with granite slabs, at the exact location where it was implanted the temple, as a future memory. Heart of the city, here is what happens to "moved" Guimarães. If the upper floors of the buildings are for housing, the ground floor is occupied by bars and restaurants. During the day you can enjoy the various terraces and the tranquility of the place. During the night, the fun is guaranteed, especially on weekends. It is here, in the Plaza de Santiago, which is the only Tourist Office in the city. A must visit court.

The Plaza de Santiago is one of the charismatic historic Guimarães. It's a cobbled square surrounded by old stone houses with wooden balconies on three levels. Some are even inclined to think that it will fall on its neighbors, the result of the passage of time. I found a place with lots of charm, which maintains its medieval layout, and very encouraged by the numerous terraces and bars. And one thing that I thought was great: There is free wifi. According to legend named after the apostle James, who brought this square the image of the Virgin of Santa Maria de Guimarães, which was placed in a pagan temple. Also in this square had a small chapel dedicated to the Apostle, but was demolished in the nineteenth century. The Plaza de Santiago is connected to the Largo da Oliveira through the arcades of Pacos do Concelho Antigos. A few steps away there is a tourist information office.
