Santiago chapel

Roncevaux est le premier village espagnol que l'on traverse, lorsqu'on parcourt le Camino Francés vers Saint Jacques de Compostelle. C'est une ville chargée d'histoire : Selon les récits du moine Eginhard, c'est ici que Roland, qui conduisait l'arrière-garde de l'armée de Charlemagne, fut tué par les Vascons. Une bataille qui donna lieu à une célèbre chanson de gestes : La Chanson de Roland. Le village compte plusieurs monuments : J'ai particulièrement aimé la chapelle gothique de Santiago qui date du XIIIème siècle. Elle est très simple mais présente une belle harmonie avec sa porte en forme de voûte et son petit clocher.

Roncesvalles is the first Spanish village which is crossed when traveling the Camino Francés to Saint Jacques de Compostela. It is a city steeped in history: According to the stories of the monk Einhard this is that Roland, who led the rearguard of Charlemagne's army, was killed by the Basques. A battle which resulted in a famous song of gestures: The Song of Roland. The village has several monuments: I particularly liked the Gothic chapel of Santiago, which dates from the thirteenth century. It is very simple but has a beautiful harmony with its arched door and a small bell tower.
