Santa María del Castillo Church

4 reviews of Santa María del Castillo Church

Church declared a national monument

This church is in Buitrago del Lozoya, in the Sierra Norte de Madrid, and is distinguished from many others I have visited, and its story, like many others, goes back centuries, around the beginning of the 14th century, and in the year 1931 it was declared a national monument. On the main altar, coffered ceiling is preserved XV century original, giving it a comfortable feeling. On the other hand, in the central nave we can also see a striking neo-Mudejar coffered ceiling dating back to the 80s, when the Church was restored, thanks to the work of young apprentices from the carpentry workshop. This workshop was developed later in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
