The oldest and largest fortified church
The amplitude of the phenomena of the fortified churches in South Transylvania is unique in European architecture, by its number of churches, in total, more than 300 forts that were built everywhere medieval times. The buildings are varied and the techniques used have nothing to do with the town center 10 kilometers away. Protection against invasions by migratory populations was the main reason why the forts were built. The first forts were quite simple, but over time, security measures become more and more elaborate. Between the XIV and XVI centuries Saxon communities build small towns with high security around their churches, which are generally the most strategically located buildings in an area (over mountains and hills, mainly).
