The oldest and largest fortified church

The amplitude of the phenomena of the fortified churches in South Transylvania is unique in European architecture, by its number of churches, in total, more than 300 forts that were built everywhere medieval times. The buildings are varied and the techniques used have nothing to do with the town center 10 kilometers away. Protection against invasions by migratory populations was the main reason why the forts were built. The first forts were quite simple, but over time, security measures become more and more elaborate. Between the XIV and XVI centuries Saxon communities build small towns with high security around their churches, which are generally the most strategically located buildings in an area (over mountains and hills, mainly).

The oldest and largest fortified church in the country is in Medias. It's called Santa Margarita and was built in 1438-1488, on a site that had a XIII century small church. The facade of the romantic style church joined the Gothic church then. In the second half of the XV century the church was fortified with 5 defensive towers and 2 rounds of walls. You can visit every day except Sunday during mass.
