Santa Catalina Martir Church

The Axarquía village of Arenas is in the Ruta Mudejar and only 10 km from Velez Malaga. Its most representative monument is its church, dedicated to St. Catherine Martyr and also within walking distance of the village of Castillo de Bentomiz. You can find it after passing through the narrow, winding streets, reaching a small square, where you will find a small building. It was erected on the old mosque, dating from the sixteenth century and is in a Mudejar style. In 1926, a fire nearly destroyed it and it was partially rebuilt. On the altarpiece you can see the image of crucified Christ. On the left is the Immaculate Virgin and the image of the town's patron saint, Santa Catalina Martir.
