Hundiendo sus raíces en el lejano siglo IV, y estrangulando los restos del que fue campamento romano conocido como Octavianum, nació el que es hoy en día uno de los más hermosos monasterios de Cataluña. No tuvieron tanta suerte los monjes visigodos que lo fundaron, ya que fueron pasados a cuchillo por los árabes un par de siglos después, aunque el alma del monasterio resistió, y tras la reconquista sirvió de base religiosa e incluso militar para ir repoblando espiritualmente las tierras catalanas, fundando otros pequeños cenobios que dependían directamente de él. Su poder fue inmenso e inmensos también sus dominios, por lo que atrajo a una multitud de fieles y medrosos en busca de trabajo a cambio de comida o dineros de la iglesia. Esa riqueza de la que hablamos fue el instrumento para levantar el edificio que hoy podemos contemplar, un magnífico ejemplo del románico al gótico que engloba un claustro, una espectacular iglesia y varias dependencias capitulares, todo ello protegido por unas enormes murallas y torres de defensa. Si espectacular resulta rodear el edificio y admirarse ante este convento que más parece un castillo, nuestro ojos vagarán sin rumbo por las maravillas que ofrece la fachada principal del templo, con un rosetón de ocho metros de diámetro que se cuenta entre los mayores del mundo. Magnífica también su torre de campanario cuya vista, casi completa, se puede disfrutar desde la Plaza de Octaviá, que era el antiguo huerto de los monjes y hoy es una tranquila y sosegada plaza. Muy cerquita de Barcelona, en la conocida localidad de San Cugat del Vallés, se encuentra el Monasterio de San Cugat, otro monasterio benedictino que fue de vital importancia durante muchos años, especialmente en la provincia de Barcelona. Sus orígenes datan, ni más ni menos, que del siglo IX. Dicen que lo más destacable que tiene es el claustro. Lamentablemente, yo no pude entrar pues estaba en obras. Hace 20 años que vivo en SANT CUGAT , estoy orgullosa del Lugar donde vivo, y os animo a venir a conocer esta bonita y pequeña ciudad, pues tiene luga- res muy interesantes que conocer. Tiene su Calle Mayor, en el casco antiguo, su calle Santamaría ,la mas comercial de la ciudad,si vais por la Rabasada y os adentráis en el Collserola, podréis llegar hasta la Ermita de SANT MEDIR, otra joya del románico y muy venerada por los vecinos de SANT CUGAT ,una vez al año se organiza una romería muy popular aquí y viene mucha gente de Barcelona con tartanas adornadas para la ocasión ,esta es una traición que data de muchísimos años, los jóvenes de hoy, pernoctan la noche anterior en tiendas de campaña,y durante el día hay muchas actividades.
