Plaza with a statue of a woman and her son
St. Nicholas Square is 1 of the hubs of Bastia. This big square has many stores, cafes and restaurants. From the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the square was constructed on water. The Gulf waters were removed to construct the foundation, which caused the collapse of many buildings. There are 2 statues, 1 at each end of the square. 1 of them shows a woman with her son, she sacrifices for the war: in WWI half of the Corsican men died, which leads us to understand the importance of this statue in the center square of Bastia . The other represents Napoleon! It is the only statue of the character that is in all the north of the island (there is a 2nd in the south, in Ajaccio).
