Named after Pope Pius V
San Juan Tower is Pie Square, built in the sixteenth century it's named after Pope Pius V who reigned at this time at Avignon. The Brotherhood of St. John of Jerusalem existed at this time and borders the square to the north and west, separating the Jewish quarter. In the nineteenth century a column with an iron cross at its center was added. To fit the square within a more comprehensive urban plan reforms were made and in 1860 the opportunity was taken to restore San Juan Tower.
