San Juan Cotzal
San Juan Cotzal is a town north of Nebaj, separating Nebaj and Chajul from the peculiar region of Guatemala, the Ixil triangle. In this small region of Quiche they speak Ixil, a language different from quiché and they also dress differently. To visit Cotzal you have to take a tour with one of the several agencies in Nebaj that organize either hiking or horseback tours or a one-day road drive. Prices vary according to whether you do the excursión on foot or by car, and the number of days but you will not usually spend more tan 20 euros per day per person. This includes guide, accommodation and food.
You sleep in people's houses, they are generally special tourist homes that have been donated by a charity. The money raised benefits the community and is spent mainly on health and education projects. The San Juan Cotzal jewelry mainly made of silver, is well-known in the country for its quality and good price. The food is not very varied but there is always a booth that sells sweets and commodities should you need them. The main food is the corn tortilla and beans.
