San Juan Chamula
The indigenous village of San Juan Chamula is located about 10 kilometers from San Cristobal de las Casas in the Chiapas region. It is still a very traditional town, near the Guatemalan mountains. In the small church, there are many statues and images of Catholic saints. The Tzotzil are the majority population of San Juan Chamula. Founded in 1524, the city retains a small colonial church built in the town square but not much more remains of the Spanish colonization. The interior of the church has no benches to sit on, instead there are burning candles on the floor whre the worshippers sit praying.
