Sword in the Stone of San Galgano
San Galgano Abbey is a religious building located a few kilometers from the city of Siena, in the small town of Chiusdino. The place is now reduced to only a few walls, almost completely in ruins, but it is interesting to see both the site and its history. San Galgano died in 1181. After having led a dissipated life, he changed his life to pursue penance. The Abbey was built over his grave in 1185. They say that in the moment of conversion, Galgano Guidotti, on Christmas morning of 1180, plunged his sword into a rock in order to turn his sword into a cross. In the building of the Rotunda, one of the few things that remains standing is a hilt of a sword stuck in the rock that has not deteriorated.
