La plaza contigua a la basílica fue siempre comercial. En 1836 se instalo allí la fuente de los Leones. La plaza San Francisco es la segunda de la ciudad por su antigüedad y aquí residieron los capitanes generales de cuba, de 1763 a 1794. Frente a la iglesia, se llega a la antigua Lonja del Comercio, con una estatua del Mercurio en el tejado, tras la que la Terminal Sierra Maestra aguarda las embarcaciones.
