Campeche was the most important port on the Yucutan pninsula
Campeche was constructed on an old Mayan fishing village around the year 1540. In colonial times it was the most important port on the Yucatan peninsula, where they exported wood and roots for making dyes. The prosperity of Campeche White made frequent pirate attack British, French and Dutch, who ravaged, robbed and burned the city on many occasions. The worst attack in the year 1663 led to the killing of many and therefore thick walls were built around about the city, which in turn were reinforced with 8 bastions, 7 of which have been changed for other uses and can be visited by tourists. We can not miss 59th Street, between the gates of the Sea and the Earth, with renovated colonial houses painted in blue, pink and ocher.
