San Francisco Convent and Church

Los orígenes de este antiguo Convento se remontan a fines del siglo XIII o principios del XIV. Se cree que fue edificado para Los Templarios y donado por D. Dinis a los franciscanos en el año 1312. A partir de la supresión de las órdenes religiosas en 1834, el convento fue parcialmente vendido para construir un espacio público que se denominó Plaza de la República. El templo pasó a ser administrado por la Cofradía de la Orden Tercera de San Francisco (orden seglar). Se le realizaron numerosas reformas a lo largo de los siglos XVIII y XIX a consecuencia de los terremotos producidos en la zona, en 1722 y 1755 y al incendio que sufrió en el año 1881 el convento al que pertenecía. En el templo sólo se conserva de su origen la sacristía y dos capillas de estilo gótico. En su exterior posee un campanario construido en el siglo XVIII de estilo barroco. La cúpula es de una gran belleza y luminosidad. Se destacan en el interior de la iglesia la imagen de Santa Ana del siglo XV y la talla barroca situada en el altar mayor. El lugar es el de la iglesia, los demás datos son de la Cámara Municipal de quien depende Patrimonio.

The origins of this former convent dating back to the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. Believed to have been built for the Templars and donated by D. Dinis to the Franciscans in 1312. Since the suppression of the religious orders in 1834, the convent was partially sold to build a public space that is called Republic Square. The temple came to be administered by the Brotherhood of the Third Order of St. Francis (Secular Order). He made many reforms throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a result of the earthquakes produced in the area, in 1722 and 1755 and the fire it suffered in 1881 the convent to which he belonged. In the only temple of its origin remains the sacristy and two Gothic chapels. The exterior has a bell tower built in the eighteenth century baroque. The dome is of great beauty and radiance. They stand inside the church of Santa Ana image fifteenth century and baroque sculpture located on the main altar.
