San Francisco

Es el mayor edificio religioso de la villa de Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Para encontrarlo es recomendable entrar en la población, viniendo desde Jerez, por la primera entrada posible, antes de la gasolinera y seguir siempre de frente hasta cruzar dos rotondas. Tras la segunda se inicia una bajada que lleva a la plaza de San Francisco. La orden franciscana se situaba en el exterior de las ciudades, junto a la entrada a las mismas. En este caso se ubicó delante del camino del mar, pues en la parte alta se hallan los edificios históricamente más importantes. Se trata de una construcción del siglo XVIII, en estilo barroco contrarreformista, como muestra su sillería acabada en arcosolio y su portada clasicista en un momento en que el barroco optaba por los volúmenes y la bicromía. Interiormente tiene una sola nave, con bóveda de medio cañón, ocho capillas laterales y crucero con cúpula sobre tambor. Lo más interesante el Retablo Mayor, que está sin dorar, y las tallas del Santo Entierro y la Virgen de la Soledad. Fue construida a partir de 1752 por Juan Rodríguez Portillo y acabada por sus hijos.
