In the sixteenth century, the Spanish conquest had a very strong impact as can be seen in the lives of the Indians of the region, whose attire, meals, parties, crafts and markets are among the highlights of the land. Also must be taken into account that the city, founded in 1528, has always been marked by centuries of isolation, while retaining the charm of a colonial village, carrying a long and turbulent history of conflict between Creoles and Indians. Here in February 1994 the Zapatista uprising began. A strong military presence still exists in the city today. Many shops are selling all kinds of Zapatista paraphernalia.
