Pedro Jareño
An unbeatable panoramic view
Very closet o the area where the main hiking paths in La Palm split, close to San Andrés, is the San Bartolo lookout point. It’s certainly of the most charming places on the island, at least in my opinion. You just have to head up, stopping at each one of the dozens of viewpoints that lie along the path. Each one has its own history and unique views.
This one, however, has two different purposes. On one hand, it’s an astronomical lookout, and it’s perfectly indicated so visitors can easily enjoy the marvelous night skies found around La Palma, and locate the North Star.
I went during the day, so I lost out on the spectacle, but I learned a legend – the legend of the monument of the lover.
Popular tradition says that a local mountain Sheppard, the typical type that uses their spear for balance while quickly descending down the mountain, fell in love with a woman that asked him to return to where she was in only three jumps over the gap, where they’d begin their eternal love. He dedicated the first jump to God, and returned. The second to the Virgin Mary, and returned. On the third, dramatic and dedicated to her, he fell into the gap, losing his life.
Apart from the tragic legend and from the original statue that stands, the vantage point offers unbeatable panoramic views of the surrounding area.
