The picturesque town of Salo is located in the middle of a beautiful Gulf and on the slopes of Mount San Bernardo. It is considered the capital of the upper area of Lake Garda. Salo is associated with the more recent history of Italy as Mussolini established the Italian Social Republic, also known as the Republic of Salò or Fascist Social Republic of Salo, here. Luckily Salo has broken away from its tumultuous past and today is a beautiful town predominantly focused on tourism, with many restaurants situated on the Lake, scattered throughout the vast lakeside promenade that runs along the placid shores of Garda .
