Se encuentra en las cercanías de Vilafranca de conflent situado sobre una pequeña meseta sobre las estribaciones septentrionales del macizo del Canigó, a 1.055 metros de altura. Para acceder a él se debe dejar el vehículo en el pueblo de Castell situado debajo del monasterio, y andar durante unos 45 minutos aproximadamente por un sendero que asciende un desnivel cercano a los 200 metros. A medio camino se encuentra la pequeña capilla funeraria de Sant Martí el Vell , donde se puede hacer un pequeño descanso. Más fácil es contratar una excursión en 4X4 que te deja en las puertas del monasterio. Historia:Alrededor del año 1000 y por iniciativa propia del conde de Cerdaña-Conflent, Guifré Cabreta, se empiezan las obras de construcción de la abadía de Sant Martí del Canigó, con la intención hacer venir una comunidad de monjes benedictinos, procedentes de la abadía cercana de Sant Miquel de Cuixá . Construite aux alentour de l'an mil, par Guifred II, comte de Cerdagne et Conflent. Oui, Guifred. Ca a plus de gueule que les Steve, ou Brandon que l'on a piqué aux séries américaines à une certaine époque (humour bien entendu, puisque j'ai moi même un excellent ami qui s'appelle Bryan). Juché sur un piton rocheux des pentes nord du Canigou, l'abbaye s'aperçoit au bout d'une petite heure de marche en pente plus ou moins douce. Prototype de l'art roman, elle se fond magnifiquement dans les couleurs d'un paysage automnal. De cet endroit, on peut également jouir d'une belle vue sur le haut Conflent et sur les massifs pyrénéens. La visite est payante (5 euros si mes souvenirs sont bons), sauf si vous y'allez le jour du double millénaire de la consécration qui devrait avoir lieu aux alentours du 10 novembre 3009. Pensez y!

Pas de route pour les véhicules, la montée se fait le long d'une sinueuse rampe pédestre à déclivité assez conséquente! Tout là-haut, à un peu plus de 1000m d'altitude, le calme, la sérénité des lieux frappe le visiteur. Et le panorama est à la hauteur de toutes les espérances! Cette abbaye fut fondée en 1005 par le comte de Cerdagne et de Conflent Guifred Cabreta. Au cours des siècles qui suivirent, l'édifice connut les pillages et un fort tremblement de terre en 1428. Après la révolution, elle fut laissée à l'abandon. C'est au cours du 20ème siècle qu'elle fut patiemment restaurée.

Il faut avoir envie de découvrir le site car on commence avec une demi-heure de marche et autant dire que ça monte ! On peut aussi y aller en jeep, c'est moins intéressant. La communauté des Béatitudes occupe le lieu, réalise les visites et tient une petite boutique. En arrivant tout en haut, on découvre un endroit calme, reposant et surtout magnifique. La visite guidée nous entraîne dans les bâtiments, à l’assaut de l'histoire de cet endroit et aussi, à la découverte des personnes y vivant de nos jours. Nous avons adoré le lieu et le paysage.

Fondée au Xe siècle par le comte de Cerdane Guifred II, l'abbaye de Saint Martin du Canigou se trouve derrière un piton rocheux du Canigou à près de 1100 mètres. Sécularisée au XVIIIe siècle, l'abbaye est fermée durant la Terreur, les biens sont éparpillés. Dès 1900, l'évêque de Perpignan entreprend sa reconstruction puis la vie spirituelle y est rétablie. De nos jours, cette vie religieuse est maintenue : l'abbaye est habitée par la communauté des Béatitudes. Ce paysage naturel est sauvage, les chapiteaux de marbre, la crypte voutée sont autant d'appels à la visite.

La empinada cuesta que lleva hasta el monasterio de Sant Martí del Canigó puede desmoralizar a más de un turista pero nosotros recomendamos firmemente no darse por vencido y llegar hasta el destino final, el impresionante monasterio de Sant Martí, en la casi sagrada para los catalanes montaña del Canigó. El monasterio sigue habitado y su estado de conservación es muy bueno, la visita guiada es en francés pero con un poco de conocimiento y buena voluntad puede seguirse sin problema, merece especial atención el mirador del monasterio, un poco más elevado y que nos permite tener las mejores vistas sobre el cenobio.
