The largest city in Cornwall
St Austell has about 23,000 inhabitants, making it the biggest city in Cornwall. It has long been an important mining center, as it has a lot of kaolinite, a mineral used in the paper and ceramics industries. Today, like the rest of Cornwall, it is primarily a tourist town, popular for both its proximity to the beaches of the south coast, and its important historical heritage. Art and history buffs will be able to visit the Town Hall built in the nineteenth century in a Renaissance style, and the Gothic church of the Holy Trinity.
