It is located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, about 200 kilometers southwest of Casablanca. About about 380,000 people live in this walled city which is chaired by the Sultans castle (XVI century). Before 1541 the Portuguese dominated the city, and later it came under French control until the independence of Morocco in 1956. Its most important feature is the fishing industry. It also exports phosphates through its port and has an important ceramic industry. Among its places of interest are The Museum of Ceramics and The Castle of the Sea: Small fortress built by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, which retains old cannons cast in Spain, Holland and Portugal.
