One of the first Catholic churches in the Balkans
The Church of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic church founded in 1856 by the Vincentian mission. It is one of the first Catholic churches in the Balkans. The vice consul in Bitola agreed to build a monument known as locanda, "foreign home", aimed at the high Turkish military authorities. It was paid for by the French government. It was consecrated Easter Day. It was bombed during the Balkan Wars in 1914 and the First World War, during which the Turkish military arsenal explosions damaged the street very much. Its facade is in the center of the main street of Bitola, Chirok Sokak. It was built in the Gothic style with a high central door and arched windows.
