Ruins of Quiriguá

The archaeological site of Quirigua is about 90 kilometers away from Puerto Barrios. This site is mostly known for its large sandstone carvings, some of which are 10 meters tall. If you visit, buy water before starting your visit, because it's very hot and once you're inside you can't buy water anywhere.

The ruins of Quirigua are on the road from Guatemala City to Rio Dulce, near the border with Honduras, and are ancient Mayan ruins of a city that, in his time, depended on the city of Copan in Honduras. The ruins themselves are not the most impressive, when you have seen the Yucatan, Palenque, Chichen Itza or Tikal, do not be impressed. But the beauty of Quirigua are contrails, which are miraculously preserved, knowing that we are in a region where only 10 years ago there was a war, and it also has a tremendous seismic activity, neither earthquakes nor destroyed briganes Quirigua. Contrails are in a large field, which was the site of the city before, are protected from the rain by a plastic roofs. The city is in the Classic Maya period, was created to Century II, and estimated its heyday around the eighth century. To visit you can take a bus that goes to Rio Dulce or Puerto Barrios, and get off at the junction of Quirigua, where tuc tucs that take you to about 10 Q to the entrance. You will pass through banana, banana fields in the region of Los Amates.
