Lazareto Ruins

Near Vila de Abrao, you can find the Lazaretto ruins and the Preta beach. This is where newcomers, immigrants and travelers, were quarantined on arrival if they came from countries with cholera. It opened in 1886, and after a few years, was deactivated and converted into a prison. Finally, it was demolished on the orders of Governor Carlos Lacerda, and today only ruins remain.
