Royal Palaces of Abomey
Abomey is a city in the Republic of Benin, which is located in the Zhou region, 110 kilometers north of the city of Cotonou. In this town, the ancient kingdom of Dahomey was established (by a tribe called Fon) and many of its buildings date from the seventeenth century. The importance of the Palaces of Abomey is that it is the only remnant that remains of this ancient monarchical dynasty, which has disappeared. Some of the details that draw attention to the decoration of these castles are the carvings on the walls, which chronicle the power and history of the Fon tribe. Originally the town was surrounded by a mud wall, with six gates and protected by a ditch.
In addition to the palaces already mentioned you can find a market and a large square containing the barracks that served to strengthen the protection of the palaces. The Royal Palaces of Abomey, with its unique architecture and decoration are the living reminder of a vanished kingdom and it is for this reason that this enigmatic place is worth visiting.
