Hunedoara Castle
The Royal Chapel in the Hunedoara Castle dates from when the Corvin family transformed this huge defensive castle into a place of residence. The first phase of construction began at the time of Ioan of Hunedoara, around 1450. Like all the residential rooms on the ground floor, the chapel was built in the late Gothic style. It has a nave and a small side room. The columns support a high ceiling allowing the royal family to discreetly attend religious services. It used to be a Roman Catholic chapel whose patron was St. John the Baptist. In the 17th century, Prince Gabriel Bethlen had the ceiling lowered five feet.
