Roman Bridge of Ponte de Lima

6 reviews of Roman Bridge of Ponte de Lima

Great view

The bridge is a major monument formed by 16 arches spanning the River Lima. It gives its name to the Portuguese villa. Built in the 5th century by the Romans to link the cities of Braga and Astorga, five arches and some milestones from the era have been preserved. Pedro I rebuilt it in the 14th century arming the battlements and towers. The bridge was remodelled and is now a pedestrian walkway, and the most modern parallel through which the national road leads into the town. It has a great view of the mountainous skyline and the river Lima, whose level rose so much in the early 20th century that the city suffered at least two floods reaching one of the Towers of Homage.
