Meandro El Melero

This was one of the most amazing places we discovered on our trip to Extremadura.

Arriving to the most photogenic point isn’t easy and you need to drive along some pretty rough roads. But once you arrive and see the view, you won’t believe your eyes.

In that precise moment, you lose all notions of space and time and have to remind yourself that you’re in Extremadura. You feel like, I don’t know…like you’re in the Amazon or something.

The view was postcard-perfect and it left us with a wonderful impression of Extremadura.

Before you see the Riomajo de Abajo River Bend, you get the distinct feeling that you’re lost and won’t arrive anywhere. After heading a few kilometers down a dirt road with a vertigo-inducing cliff to your left (next time I’ll do it walking, not in car), you arrive at this marvelous place.

It’s one of the prettiest river bends I’ve ever seen. In general, the Las Hurdes sub-region is full of natural areas and I’d recommend it to everyone looking to disconnect from the world and immerse themselves in nature.

I’d suggest going by car. The drive from the town of Riomalo de Abajo is simple and rather quick. There’s a parking lot at the top and a well-designed lookout point. If you can manage to go at sunset the views will be even better. 100% recommended.
