Grappa Self-service
Rifugio Altissimo can be found on the 2078m peak of Monte Altissimo di Nago. The mountain was strategically significant during World War One and as a consequence there is a wide zig-zagging track which runs from Rifugio Graziani to the summit. So the 400+m climb up to the Rifugio is pretty straight forward and well-suited to snow-shoeing in the winter. It also offers great views towards Lago di Garda and Monte Baldo.
From the outside the rifugio appears pretty ramshackle but inside it is cosy with a bar/restaurant offering hot sandwiches or a plate of pasta. However the unique feature is the self-service grappa bar.
Chose from a range of labelled glass jars (including ginger, star anise, chilli pepper, lemon grass) and ladle your selection into a shot glass. Guaranteed to keep you warm all the way down.
