The Great Rift Valley

The Great Rift Valley is a huge geological fracture that traverses a total of 4,830 kilometers. Most of the valley is in Africa, although there are also parts in the Red Sea and the Jordan Valley. The most outstanding part of this spectacular valley is in the area spanning from Djibouti to Mozambique. The Rift Valley is home to stunning and diverse landscapes in countries like Ethiopia. The valley began to form in southeastern Africa about 30 million years ago and still continues to grow today, both in width and length. The valley is gradually created by earthquakes and volcanic activity. In Ethiopia you can for example see salt deserts that were once lakes.

When you look down the only road that crosses the Afar region, you can see up close the immense valley and its landscapes. It is a spectacular sight that becomes more impressive with sunsets, as it seems that the world ends here as you find completely deserted but mountainous landscapes, places where contradictions are present at all times, without water lakes and mountains without vegetation. The Rift Valley is also causing this area to be one of the hottest on the planet, with temperatures often reaching 50 degrees Celsius. This makes life in these places hard and most of the population is nomadic and looking for oasis constantly. This is one of the most unique landscapes on the planet with a spectacular beauty.
