Viva la Vida Vegetarian Restaurant

4 reviews of Viva la Vida Vegetarian Restaurant

Green I love you!

Excellent

The restaurant Viva la Vida is one of the most famous spots in Madrid in terms of vegetarian gastronomy.

To begin with, what stands out the most is the decoration. A rustic and colorful mix, with wicker chairs and painted walls, linen curtains, faded light...

As we said, in Viva la Vida you do not eat meat, but it is perfect for all tastes. The system is the following: you eat by weight. With a ticket you can eat 500 grams of food and 200 grams of dessert. Like this it sounds very little. I was actually sure I would still be hungry. How wrong I was...

500 grams of food is a lot, and even more so with rice and pasta, that make you full. Our selection was the following: eggplant lasagna, rice with Chinese mushroom, couscous, garlic rice, pancake filled with various vegetables, sushi, falafel and polenta balls, tomatoes with cheese, mushroom and seed bread. Everything was good, especially the rice and vegetarian lasagna.

But the best was still to come. The desserts, with numerous cakes to choose from, are delicious. We could choose different ones to taste. So we had chocolate and orange cake, chocolate cookies, banana cake, apple and carrot cake, very good.

In the end we were full. 700 grams is a lot actually.

It is a place I would recommend to try something different and see the wonderful things one can make out of products from the land.

For those who eat a lot it can be a little expensive but at least it will be healthy!

Paying according your consumption

Viva la Vida restaurant started in another place in Huertas, but the one I want to talk about is the one in La Latina.

A buffet of vegetarian food at weight and a market of organic products (pulses, cereals, vegetables, wine, oil...); and this all week long.

The truth is I went there very late and I could not have dinner, there was almost nothing left in the buffet but what they had looked very good. I did have time to have cardamom and soy tea while they were telling me about the dishes they you usually have and that change according to clients' recommendations. Moreover, I could have a look at the dining room downstairs, which is an explosion of colors and plants, very much in keeping with the spirit of the place.

It works as follows: you take what you want to have and you go weigh it. 100 grams cost 1.80€ and this way you do not waste food (problem of all buffets) since you pay according to what you eat and you can even snack and eat for 4€ some delicious dishes.

This is the concept that in my opinion is missing in the new minimalists restaurants: it is not paying a lot for little food, but paying according to your consumption.

I plan a special dinner at Viva la Vida.
