An essential stop
Washington DC is a city built to impress visitors. Designed to show the world the power and majesty of the United States, the city was designed by French city planner Pierre L'Enfant in 1790, after being engaged by Thomas Jefferson. George Washington chose the final location beside the Potomac River. As a planned city, Washington DC has wide avenues, large roundabouts, monuments and memorials, in addition to the official government buildings of the USA. Since its inception, the capital has not stopped growing, with new monuments regularly added to appeal to the patriotism of the American people.
One of my favorite spots in Washington is the steps that lead to the Lincoln Memorial. From here the views across the city are magnificent, especially in the evening when the Obelisk and the Capitol are reflected in the Reflecting Pool located at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. To the left is the Vietnam War Memorial, and to the right that of the Korean War. This whole area is one of the most visited places in the USA, and for me, an essential stop on your tour of the capital.
