Radcliffe Camera

The Radcliffe Camera is one of the most beautiful buildings in the old center of Oxford. Colloquially, students call it Radders, or Rad Cam. The building was designed by James Gibbs and built in the mid 18th century. It's English Palladian style. John Radcliffe, whom the building is named after, was a scientist in King William III's Court. He wanted to build a library for students, but he wasn't able to before his death. Initially it was thought that there would be an extension to the Bodleian Library, which is next door. But finally came this beautiful building came around. Only the college students can go inside.

But it's worth a few minutes to stop by and admire it for a minute or two. It's one of the first libraries in the country. The site has three main floors on the outside, and two on the inside. Columns support the building's facade. The area around it is paved and landscaped. A few movies, such as Sherlock Holmes, and The Saint filmed some scenes here.

With its "semicircular" is the brain of the Bodelian Library. The story goes that it was John Radcliffe, physician to William III and Mary II of England, who tried to build a scientific library in Oxford but moving this location, the building was taken by the Library Bodleyn to source more jobs and study reading. Visit Inside is impossible unless you are a student at one of the colleges of Oxford University, but I was lucky enough to find a librarian and about to retire and to tell the story that in Spain studying the Diploma in Librarianship and Documentation was excited (not to be okay if professional colleague or simply for being Spanish) and I did a tour in Spanish that seemed drawn from the same time when this building was constructed hehe. Of course, I could not pull even a single photo without flash. The nice lady told me that many students choose to take books from the Radcliffe Camera rooms to enjoy the paintings on the walls and ceilings to regret staff. Another curiosity is that beneath this square have your site more than 600,000 volumes. The best view of the Radcliffe Camera (besides from the same town, which is very spacious) is from the top of the tower of St Mary the Virgin church, which is just one side of Radcliffe Square, but beware that nothing is free in UK and climb the Gothic turret are 2 pounds for students.

Passion for culture

This beautiful building (at first glance a baptistery) was the room (as suggested by the word "camera") used to house the library Racliffe Science. This marvel was built by a wealthy man, the doctor John Radcliffe, as the will of a will which had as construction start date 1737. This work the first evidence of circular library built on several floors and English as well as secretly connected to the nearby Bodleian Library (including reading room) and at the University of Sciences. Its construction has used local stone from Headington and Burford and took several years. The building is very impressive and worth a visit, maybe even inside.
