First a residence of popes
First it was just a residence of popes, then a papal palace, in the XIX century a royal palace and finally, after the proclamation of the Republic, a presidential palace. Its construction began in the sixteenth century and wasn't completed until the eighteenth. It's a real "mini city of power" because it's large and has been surrounded by administrative buildings such as the Constitutional Court. The stables of the palace are now used for temporary exhibitions.
