Qait Bay Fortress

On our trip to Egypt, we couldn't miss a visit to Alexandria. Up to the coast from Cairo, it wasn't included in our travel pack, so we hired our own taxi who charged us $ 100, round trip. We went to see the fort of Quait-Bey (Qaitbay), which was built where the famous lighthouse was. It belonged to the Mamelukes and the Naval Museum's inside displaying remnants of the wars of Napoleon and Roman times. There's also a mosque. Apart from the entrance fee if you want to take photos they see you a different ticket. bummer! The views of the Mediterranean are really nice.

This was the most important castle in the 8th and 9th centuries and it sunk enemy ships trying to enter Egyptian national waters. The castle was considered as a deterrent to enemies coming from the north.
