Originalmente Munich contaba con cuatro puertas de acceso, ya la ciudad se encontraba murallada, pero la expansión de la ciudad provocó que en el siglo XVIII la pared tuviera que ser demolida y solo se conservan tres de de ellas. La más conocida es la Puerta Karstor, que da acceso al casco viejo de ciudad y a la parte mas bonita y mas pintoresca de la ciudad. Recibió su nombre en honor del príncipe Carlos Teodoro, quien decidió derribar las murallas para permitir la expansión de la ciudad. Además de esta puerta del Príncipe Carlos, también se le ha dedicado la plaza que se encuentra más allá de la misma.
