Póvoa de Varzim

1 review of Póvoa de Varzim

Póvoa de Varzim

First, Póvoa de Varzim is a city for walking. It belonged to Portugal in the tenth century, but it owes its rise and development to fishing and canning. It was, from the beginning, an important fishing port that later became an important tourist resort in northern Portugal (and still is). It can be reached by Metro from Porto (line N3). The main places to visit are: Tourism: Grand Casino, the beaches (Redonda and Salgueira Lagoa beaches), marina. Entertainment (restaurants, terraces, cafes): The Long Passeio Alegre, Avda Dos Banhos (boardwalk) and Esplanade do Carvalhido. Walking: Avda dos Banhos (Promenade) and Avda dos Descobrimentos (which goes to Vila do Conde).

Heritage: The eighteenth century Aqueduct (between Terroso and Vila do Conde), the Fort of Our Lady of the Conception, Mother Church, Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Lapa Church, Church of Mercy, Church of Our Sra. de los Dolores, Church of Exile, Church of San José de Ribamar. Streets and squares of the historic center: Praça do Almada and surroundings, Praça Marques de Pombal, Rua da Junqueira and their intersections (pedestrian zone, shopping), Avda Mousinho Albuquerque. Picturesque places: District of fishermen, fishing port. Museums/Culture: Municipal Archives, Municipal Library, Museum of Ethnography and History. The surroundings: The parish of San Pedro de Rates (with its magnificent Romanesque church and Pillory), Mount St. Felix (viewpoint, mills and chapel) and the town of Vila do Conde (about 3 km away).
