Important port
Toulon is a fairly large town located about 50 km southeast of Marseille and has an important port that allowed it to have a long history as the most important naval base of the French Navy in the Mediterranean. Thanks to its port Tolun has become a significant commercial and strategic city in order to get to other places, such as Corsica. It was precisely for this reason why we came to Toulon - to catch the ferry that took us to the French island. The port has fairly large dimensions and is divided into two area, one side is the part where the big ships come (both freight and passengers) and the other is the harbor for small boats.
The most beautiful is the latter, no doubt, because it is full of all kind of beautiful boats, it is very easy to see sailboats or small well kept boats that are used for fishing. The largest part of the port (where the ferries arrive) is surrounded by a beautiful promenade that features some parks - from here you can enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean. The smaller harbor is surrounded by restaurants and cafes that are mostly for tourists but there are also several shops where you can buy souvenirs, but as you can imagine, the prices are more expensive than the city shops. Near the small harbor there is a fairly large building belonging to the army and, although you can not go inside, I recommend that you see the outside because it is quite nice and has two cannons by the main door. On the banks of the port are the major ferry company offices, such as Corsica Ferries, but depending on the time of year you arrive you may find them closed all day, which is what happened to us, so I recommend that you research opening times before you go or get your ferry tickets online.
