A major island city
Port Ellen is one of the major cities on the island of Islay. Its name comes from the wife of the merchant who founded it, Frederick Campbell. It was a good choice, as the waters of the bay are the deepest on this part of the island, which made it ideal for mooring boats and therefore trading. This is where most malt is produced, so it is still one of the main ports of the island. It's one of the best places to dine, or pick up supplies (like petrol). The sunsets over the bay are beautiful, and the people are warm and friendly. An ideal base for exploring this area of the island, with notable attractions like Lagavulin Bay (with its famous distillery) or the ruins of the castle of Dunyvaig.
