A traditional village
This is officially the best-preserved historical settlement on the island. Founded by Walter Frederick Campbell in 1828, the name of this town comes from his mother. He was a merchant who built a port for the barley that was needed for the nearby distillery (then called Lochindaal, today known as Bruichladdich after several name changes). In principle, the foundation of the town was to make somewhere for the distillery workers to live. Today it is more of a commuter town, but still a very traditional village by the sea with a beautiful lighthouse. Most residents work in the two distilleries nearby,
