This is the best day trip to make from San Francisco by car. It takes about two hours, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and then following the famous Highway 101 along the coast. There's so much you can find ... fabulous scenery, deer, sea lions, whale watching and Point Reyes Lighthouse on the coast of the Farallones. Stop for something to eat in Point Reyes, then return through Fairfax and the redwood forests. Unforgettable.
