1 review of El Cortecito Crafts Shops

Prepare to haggle

Along the coast of Punta Cana, between the resorts, you'll find these little markets, with a group of local shops built of wood, where you can buy all kinds of Dominican souvenirs and crafts. The place I visited by the Playa El Cortecito, very close to my hotel. The Dominican store-keepers are very forward - as soon as they see you approaching, they begin to talk (hey friend! ... where are you from? ... Spanish, no? ... I have a cousin there ...) and will do everything short of using physical force to get you into their store. Inside you can find everything - sarongs, t-shirts with Dominican Republic logos, jewelry allegedly made from larimar or amber (actually plastic - you're better off going to a proper shop), key rings, small wooden pendants ... but the most abundant are the pictures, the "Taino art".

The Tainos were the natives who lived on the island before its colonization. The pictures are painted on waterproof treated fabric, and are quite colourful, showing figurative art representing their deities, animals ... Be sure to haggle, whatever you buy. You should never pay more than 50-70% of the original price. They're not trying to rip you off, it's just the way they sell things - it has to be a tug of war. It's fun, if a little tiresome. By the way, you pay in Dominican pesos or U.S. dollars. If you only have euros, there is an exchange there, but to avoid fraud and scams, it is best for the seller to accompany you (there everyone knows each other and, knowing that it is for him, they won't give any counterfeit notes).
