One of the most popular tourist stops in Iceland
From Reykjavik you can see the three most prominent landmarks of Iceland towards Pingvellir on Ring Road 1, north and then by 36. Pingvellir is was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2004 and it is one of the most popular tourist stops in Iceland. It is 50 km northeast of the capital on the banks of Pingvallavatn. There is a visitors center at the entrance with an exhibition about the place. There is also a viewpoint there with a panoramic view of the whole area and Lake Pingvallavatn. Pingvellir can be visited at any time since the access door is never locked. For this reason it is worth avoiding peak hours for buses with tourists (11 to 16).
