Pillars or Columns of Hercules

Los Pilares de Hércules o Columnas de Hércules, es un monumento ubicado en un mirador en el estrecho de Gibraltar y que su función era señalar el límite donde acababa el mar Mediterráneo y donde comenzaba el océano Atlántico. Durante muchos años el mirador de los Pilares de Hércules era denominado por los promontorios que flanquean la entrada al Estrecho de Gibraltar. Las teorías de su construcción son varias ya que según los fenicios eran denominadas como las Columnas de Melkart, mientras que los griegos las denominaron como las Columnas de Heracles, hasta el nombre que hoy conocemos que lo pusieron los romanos. Se ha estudiado muchas veces el significado de su simbología desde que las columnas de Hércules fueron el origen del símbolo del Dolar, hasta que provienen del escudo de España con el símbolo Non Plus Ultra.
