The "Pelourinhos" were constructed to symbolize the power of the municipal jurisdiction. It was commissioned in 1538, and although it was initially placed on the Praca da Ribeira, it was moved to the Praça Vasco da Gama, in front of the principle facade of the City Council. It is constructed of granite in the Manueline style, and has 3 parts: a hexagonal bottom where there are many inscriptions alluding to its various locations above, a cord-shaft, and a capital with royal crest. It is known as the National Monument of the country of Portugal.
