The main square in Sibiu
Piata Mare is the main square in Sibiu, dating back from the Saxon foundation of the city in medieval towns. It was mentioned for the first time in documents from the fifteenth century; it was where fairs were organised and markets took place. During the communist era, the name changed to Republic Square, but it returned to its old name in the 1990's. There are some beautiful buildings around the area, historical sitres like Brukenthal Palace, Albastral House, and Haller Generalilor. The square is 142 metres by 93, a remarkable size for a medieval square, because it was a weak point in the defense
