Phillips Pond and Memorial

The Phillips Memorial is situated in the town of Godalming, in the UK. It has this name in honor of John George Phillips, who was born in the nearby village of Farncombe. He was the chief telegraphist on the Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912. The memorial, designed by a local architect, Thackeray Turner, was inaugaurated in 1914. It had its first renovation in 1965, during which one of the outer walls was altered by the addition of a wooden pergola, which today can be seen here. In 1922 Gertrude Jekyll and Thackeray Turner planted two vines on both sides of the pond, which are still there these days.

In 1993, the Waverley council again renewed the memorial, coating it with new layers of paint and cement, in addition they carried out tree planting and floral displays. The memorial is free to enter, and could be a place to rest during a quiet walk along the River Wey, which passes 10 feet away.
