Periana is a young town. Its name dates from 1761 and takes its name from two former defensive positions, Pereiro and Santana. Taking shape from a simple farmhouse, the physiognomy of the present town has since been remodelled, as a result of a major earthquake, which struck the Axarquia in 1884 and had an especially devastating effect in Arenas. Located 547 meters above sea level, there are excellent views, and of particularly note are two mountains of considerable height: the Torca (1499 mts.) and Marchanomas (1273 mts). Also noteworthy for its beauty, is the source of the river Guaro. Another popular place for visitors is the resort of Baños de Vilo, built in 1823 and subsequently abandoned.
The sulphurous waters of this spa provide many health benefits. The two best examples of agriculture and economy are Periana peaches and olive oil. The urban area includes the San Isidro Labrador Church, built in the Mudejar style. The gastronomic section is varied, from cachorreña soup (with cod), to morrete (made with asparagus, mushrooms, potatoes and almond sauce) and of course their peaches, pomegranates and oranges, excellent sheep or goat cheese which is often served with honey. From the 14th to the 16th of May, Periana celebrates a holiday in honor of its patron saint San Isidro and in the first weekend of September, the town holds a Peach Fair.
