Interesting Art Nouveau in Madrid
I was surprised to find this building in Plaza Matute. Maybe because my eyes are accustomed to the Modernism in Barcelona, or maybe because it’s a beautiful building made out of iron and glass, with a beautiful façade and decoration and a pure white color that, in a grey day, stands out from the rest of the buildings of the square and the Las Letras neighborhood.
But I also stopped there because in the ground floor you will find the Unión Fonográfica Independiente (The Independent Phonographic Union), a place with more than 200 square meters that houses about 18,000 references of national catalogues in an interesting music shop.
It was built in the beginning of the 20th Century, when the Art Noveau was spreading all over Europe’s big capitals, as a sign of a prosper bourgeoisie (not the case of Villa y Corte, one must say!). I was surprised to find this style here, since it is not very common in Madrid. I later found out that, along the Palacio de Longoria, it is one of the few that exist.
An interesting place and something different found in this amazing neighborhood, where you can encounter a great number of surprises. It is a beautiful, gorgeous building.
