Fundada no século XVI, Penedo carrega o título de primeiro povoado de Alagoas. A cidade fica pertinho da divisa com o estado de Sergipe. Para chegar lá de carro percorre-se quase a mesma distância a partir de Aracaju ou Maceió. O Rio São Francisco é quem marca a divisa de estados a partir de Penedo é possível fazer um passeio de balsa até a foz do rio. Bem em frente ao Rio há uma série de locais para se visitar, como a Igreja Nossa Senhora das Correntes, cujo interior é riquíssimo em detalhes, o Museu do Paço Imperial e, logo na rua de trás, o Teatro Sete de Setembro. A cidade tem um bonito casario colorido bem conservado e, em 2010, alguns monumentos passavam por reformas e obras de restauração. Sinal de que ali cuidam do nosso patrimônio histórico muito bem. Na hora do almoço o destino mais famoso é restaurante Forte da Rocheira, no bairro de Rocheira. Fica numa construção bastante alta, com belíssima vista para o Rio. Uma peculiaridade local é que eles servem carne de jacaré (em alguns meses, consulte antes). Quando estive por lá optei pelo filé de peixe à rocheira, que tem um molho com vinho branco, e não me arrependi.

Quando se chega a Penedo a primeira impressão que se tem é de ter adentrado uma cidade cenográfica. Casarões históricos, igrejas em perfeito estado de conservação, arquitetura dos séculos 17 e 18 preservadas e ao fundo o rio São Francisco para completar o cenário, dão o ar de que tudo aquilo não é real. Mas, é tudo verdade. Estamos falando da quinta cidade mais antiga do país, fundada em 1535 por Duarte Coelho. No entanto, a pequena cidade do interior alagoano, a primeira do estado por sinal, só foi reconhecida como município em 1842.

When it comes to Boulder the first impression one has is of having stepped into one scenographic city.
